2. Demons In the Dance Floor (Incident At the Catacomb Club)

At a complete loss as to how to stem the surging tide of violence, the mayor signs an executive order instituting a mandatory curfew of 9 pm: anyone caught out of doors will be immediately incarcerated. Not surprisingly, there are those who flout the order. Underground clubs begin to open, hidden enclaves for those willing to risk their lives in an attempt to blot out the fear and tragedy of the times with pulsing music, strobing lights, and endlessly flowing booze.

At one such club, horror explodes on the dance floor as five patrons – individuals the police will later find no connection between – attack without provocation, slaughtering their victims with fiendish, almost superhuman brutality. Panic ensues, nobody knowing how to stop or escape the violence.

Nobody but one. Witnesses will later say that a stranger – a long haired, bearded man in a brown leather jacket and blue jeans – leapt into action so quickly it was as if he knew the attacks were coming, was perhaps waiting for them.

What he did next, however, no one will be able to explain, only that there were flaring lights no dance floor strobes could possibly emit, and deafening roars no speakers could possibly produce. In the end, the fiends lay defeated across the gore-covered hardwood, all dead but one. The stranger then knelt down next to this last surviving killer, his head bending low. Some will say it looked like he was praying, others that he was speaking with the dying man, perhaps giving last rites.

One witness will say she heard laughter, a horrific, cackling rasp that would haunt her for the rest of her life.

Then the stranger was gone. And no, nobody knew his name...
