8. Granted Audience (a Devil's Regret)

INT. PALMER HOUSE MAIN LOBBY

A dream. Jesse walks cautiously through the grand and opulent lobby of the Palmer House, which is deserted except for him and someone playing a piano ahead. He climbs some stairs and now sees who it is. LUCIUS sits at a grand piano in the middle of the parlor, playing a somber piece of his own composition, his back partly to Jesse. As Jesse approaches, he speaks.

LUCIUS
I've missed being able to play. I'm rusty. I've always had a club foot with the sustain pedal. It's even worse now.

JESSE
Don't you mean 'cloven'?

LUCIUS
Clever. Ham-handed, but clever. But, to your point, it will be glorious to finally shed this monkey suit once and for all.

JESSE
And what then?

LUCIUS
Then, I'm sorry to say, you and your whole filthy race of God's talking apes are going to burn.

JESSE
You really, really need to let it go, man.

LUCIUS
I didn't start this. Do you think I enjoy tearing down paradise? Eden? Goshen? All that beauty, wasted? He's left me no choice.

JESSE
I didn't take you for the “predestination” type.

LUCIUS
Clever

JESSE
There's always a choice, Lucius...

LUCIUS
Time to wake up now. I just wanted to look you in the eye when you finally realized you've failed. Oh, and when you wake up? You may notice the bed's a little emptier.

JESSE
Laura...

LUCIUS
Just a little extra incentive for you to come to the party. I mean I went to so much trouble, I'd hate for you to miss it.

JESSE
Oh, I'll be there you godforsaken piece of shit.

Lucius replies with a smile. And plays the final chord.
