11. Showdown

Jesse enters the arena, the charred, smoldering remains of the Great Sacrifice all around him. Lucius looms above as the surviving hordes of his followers crawl and skitter amongst the bleachers, wanting to attack but held back by their master's will. Laura lies at Lucius' feet, seemingly unconscious. Jesse strides onto the field, across a sulfurous earth glowing black and red. There is no more discussion, no negotiation. He either sends the beast back now or humanity falls.

There is only one hope for this – a spell he has never cast for fear it would annihilate him. And it is a spell he can't cast alone. He will need to tap into something deeper – or, in point of fact, higher – than himself. Jesse's pace quickens, his hands working in strange, twisting gestures as he reaches out with his consciousness, sending its force upward past the swirling blackness of the clouds above. He reaches – and makes contact.

And is answered.
